Also known as alternative-leaved dogwood, this small tree has distinctive horizontal branches. In late spring, they’re covered with creamy, flat flower clusters covered with pollinating insects. Flowers mature into dark blue fruits on bright red stalks; relished by birds. Maroon fall foliage.
Native to: Maine - Central to eastern North America.
Growing conditions: Sun to part shade and dry to average soil.
Natural habitat: Partly shady deciduous and boreal forest woodland edges.
