Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) Plants
An herbaceous vine with very attractive, heart-shaped leaves and distinct, three-sided seed capsules that turn a golden green by fall. Tolerates occasional drought and rocky or sandy soil. Although related to the tropical yam found in grocery stores, wild yam does not grow edible tubers.
Native to: Eastern North America, except for Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont
Growing conditions: Sun to part shade in medium soil
Natural habitat: Woodland borders, thickets, fence rows, powerline clearances
Grows up to: Climbs to 15-30’
Blooms: June - July
Pairs well with: Black bugbane, mountain mint, tall American bellflower, red columbine
