A compact, herbaceous perennial that uses modified, pitcher-like leaves to trap and digest insects. Inhabiting peat bogs scarce in nitrogen, pitcherplants use carnivory to gather the nutrients they need. Purple pitcherplant is the only pitcher plant species native to Maine.
Native to: Midwest and Northeast, including Maine
Growing conditions: Sun to part shade in wet soil
Natural habitat: bogs, fens, and wetland margins
Grows up to: 8-12”
Blooms: May-August
Pairs well with: Tamarack, leatherleaf, Labrador tea, sheep laurel, large cranberry, sundews
