Wild lettuce is an edible green for early season salads and cooked greens. Tall, smooth blue-green stalks and leaves are tender without bitterness. A dramatic native biennial or short-lived perennial for the edible garden.

Growing conditions: Part shade in medium soil
Grows up to: 5-7'
Blooms: In mid-summer, typically in July
Pairs well with: Flowering raspberry, three-lobed coneflower, nodding onion, heart-leaved Alexanders, and virgin's-bower clematis
Natural habitat: Woodland openings, edges, and roadsides with moderately moist soils
Seeds per packet: 50-100
These seeds do not need a winter or cold period to germinate. Sow outdoors in pots November through April. A great species for beginner seed-sowers.
