Silky willow (Salix glaucosericea) Plants

The humble willow is one of the most underappreciated – if not unnoticed – native plants available to gardeners. Willows are tough as nails and, ecologically speaking, incredibly valuable; they form the foundation of local food webs and create vital habitat for wildlife. With almost 30 willow species native to the Northeast, options of all sizes and soil tolerances exist here. 

Silky willow is a moisture-loving, medium-sized species with distinctive silvery-green undersides to its leaves. The early spring flowers are a vital source of nectar and pollen for ground-nesting bees, including the specialist red-tailed mining bee (pictured). Silky willow is a larval host for the Acadian hairstreak butterfly. 

Plant far from pavement, sewage lines, and septic fields, as the vigorous shallow roots can cause damage. Herbivores love the new tender growth on willows, so protect first-year plantings with tall perimeter fencing. Once established, periodic heavy pruning in the winter will help control spread.
