Astunning plant for a native garden. For several weeks in June, dark green delicate clumps of foliage are covered with star-like flowers that are pollinated by clearwing moths. Beautiful as an individual clump or planted in a group. Drought tolerant.
Native to Maine: No. Native from New York State to Michigan, and south.
Growing conditions: Sun to part shade in medium to dry soil
Grows up to: 3'
Blooms: In early summer
Pairs well with: Hoary vervain, tall anemone, Canada wild rye, small's beardtongue, foxglove beardtongue, blue-eyed grass, and Canada lily
Natural habitat: Open woods
Seeds per packet: 30
These seeds need a winter or cold period to germinate -a minimum of 60 days below 40°F in moist soil (or sand or vermiculite). Sowoutdoors in pots November through February.This species is challenging to grow, and a great species for more experienced seed-sowers.
