An iconic prairie grass that was once a dominant component of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem in North America. As a warm season grass, big bluestem grows during the heat of summer and is exceptionally drought tolerant. Given its size and tendency to spread, plant with caution in small landscapes.
Native to: Most of North America, including Maine
Growing conditions: Sun in dry to medium soil
Natural habitat: Grasslands, savannas, open woods, roadsides and railroads
Grows up to: 2-6’
Blooms: July-August
Pairs well with: little bluestem, wild bee-balm, foxglove beardtongue, black-eyed coneflower, New England aster
