Seed Saving and Sowing Workshop with Cultivating Community
Seed Saving and Sowing Workshop with Cultivating Community
Date: Wednesday November 13th, 2024
Time: 3:00-5:00 PM
Location: North Street Community Garden, 195 North Street Portland, ME
Join Cultivating Community and Wild Seed Project for an afternoon of exploring and celebrating all things seed! We will spend time getting to know the life cycles of different garden plants and native perennial wildflowers, and focus on how to process the native perennial seeds to prepare them for winter and grow them on for seedlings in the spring. We will learn lots about the diverse plants that grow here in Maine and their unique seed collection and seed sowing processes. To finish, we will guide a hands-on exploration of the steps of growing native plants from seed, to establishing diverse landscapes using seed-grown plants.
We’ll also explore the North Street Garden and the adjacent Mt. Joy Orchard to identify native plants you may (or may not!) recognize and demonstrate ecologically-responsible seed collecting practices for those plants. Participants will get to practice winter seed sowing themselves, taking home a pots of sown seeds and leaving a pot of sown seeds for Cultivating Community to use in their garden spaces.
