Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) Plants
A vigorous, herbaceous perennial that features showy reddish-purple stems and large, lanceolate green leaves which exude an unpleasant aroma when bruised. Has a thick taproot and 1/4" round fruits which emerge green but mature to a deep reddish-purple and are attractive to birds. Mature leaves, fruits and roots are poisonous to humans.
Native to: Maine - Eastern North America from Quebec, Ontario and Minnesota south to Florida, Texas and northern Mexico.
Growing conditions: Sun to part shade and Dry to moist soil
Natural habitat: Clearings, fields, pastures, open woods, thickets and roadsides.
Grows up to: 4-10’
